Clubwear: Put Your Best Heel Forward PDF Print E-mail

New Wave ended the seventies disco era and took the eighties by storm. The music video changed fashion drastically by introducing us to artists like Duran Duran and Blondie. Now, with hip hop artists sampling music by Stevie Nicks, and Britney Spears working so closely with Madonna, I've got a feeling the eighties are back.

I began to form this theory of mine on a recent shopping excursion. I was praying to Coco for a fashion breakthrough, when suddenly, I walked into a whole new world of heels and handbags. It was so inspiring that I couldn't wait to hit the clubs dressed to kill. Here's the lowdown on my night:

Fashion Clubwear "Everyone's going to think we've got hickeys."
This is my friend's conclusion as we take one final look at each other. I am reminded of a classic episode of Who's The Boss? Sam's trying to hide her hickey from Tony so she's wearing scarves everywhere. Later, her ditzy friend Bonnie blows her cover. Well, I'm not Samantha Micelli, and my gal pal is definitely not Bonnie. And truth be told, there's not a hickey to be found on either one of us. However, we have taken quite a liking to what I've dubbed as 'the skinny scarf'. It's Jennifer Aniston's new signature piece, and I just can't get enough. Skinny scarves are the sort of things that serve no purpose other than to accessorize. Although it hangs almost to your knees, you only wrap it around your neck once, and don't think for a second that it's practical, because the chiffon fabric won't be keeping you warm. Everyone needs at least three.

Now, it may be chilly or raining outside, but you've got to showcase a pair of strappy stilettos. Originally born in 1955, stilettos made a come back in the eighties as a lady's most lethal weapon. Another thing you may want to consider as far as footwear goes is a pair of pumps. Don't go raiding your mom's closet, though. Get a pair in a hot color, like pink or lime green. Pair them with a pair of fishnets and you'll forget all about Mom's version in trusty navy.

Okay, call me a bag lady, but if you can afford to at the time, splurge on a bag that matches your shoes. No matter what you wear, it'll look like you've carefully considered your entire look. Initial bags are youthful, and they pack a lot of punch. Or you may be torn between a retro bowling bag and a tiny satin clutch. The key is to go with one that you can pair with a lot of different things. When in doubt, go with pink. In my books, it's every season's hottest color.

Fashion Clubwear Pair any of these accessories with the looks from the most recent runway shows. Dresses are a great way to be ultra feminine. A girlie floral print will look great with some pastel mary janes, while a bold colored mini dress will beg for a low slung belt. If you're going for separates, tops have gone off the shoulder. Try layering it over a tank in a contrasting color. Think Jennifer Beals in Flashdance. Take it slightly further by choosing bright stripes or a funky geometric pattern. Choose colors in creamy pastels or citrussy shades of oranges and greens. Finally, complete the look with a pair of cropped cargos, a pleated mini, or a great pair of jeans. These are things you've probably got in your closet anyway.

One Easy-Peasy Way to Amp Up an Outfit's Sex Appeal PDF Print E-mail

Last week, when Tracey raised a red flag on the promiscuous-looking article of clothing (according to guys), it got me thinking about how narrow and itty-bitty the line can be between sexy and triple-x sexy outfits can sometimes be. That's why I was sort of relieved to come across this recent photo of Alexa Chung, where she's showing off one of my favorite Level 7 Sexy (out of 10, 'natch) style tricks:

It's a little hard to tell from this photo, but what makes her outfit so sexy is the fact that her jacket hemline falls a few inches farther down the leg than her shorts--so if you saw her walking by from the side, you might wonder what she's got going on underneath the polished-looking jacket, but not seriously consider that it's anything that'd get her a ticket for indecent exposure.*

The sexy shorts and jacket combo also works if the hemline of the jacket and shorts fall within in inch or so of each other, as seen in Becki Newton's chic camel and black get-up:

A skirt and blazer combo would work just as well, but keep in mind that "an inch or so" are the key ingredients in this sexy outfit recipe. If you go for a top layer that's much longer, you'll get a totally different vibe. Notice how Shenae Grimes' version of the jacket (or in her case, caftan) and shorts makes her look a little like a burlesque performer on break.

A little mixing and matching in front of the bedroom mirror and I bet you'll find that you can make the perfect shorts 'n' jacket combo from the goodies you've already got stashed in your closet. If not, those summer sales are a' callin'...
